What is sonography?
The word ultrasound is derived from the Latin word sono, which means sound, and the Greek word “graphia” which means drawing, and ultrasound is derived from ultra, which means beyond, and sound, which means sound.
Ultrasound is one of the methods of diagnosing diseases in medicine. This method is also called echography, echography and sonography. This method is based on ultrasound waves to examine the muscles, joints and internal organs of the body.
Unlike X-rays, ultrasound does not use any radiation. Ultrasound can also show parts of the body in motion, such as the heartbeat or blood flow in blood vessels.
There are two main types of ultrasound: pregnancy ultrasound and diagnostic ultrasound
Pregnancy sonography:
• Pregnancy confirmation
• Checking the size and position of the unborn baby
• Check the number of babies in the womb.
• Estimation of the duration of pregnancy, which is known as gestational age.
• Checking the symptoms of Down syndrome, which includes the thickening of the back of the baby’s neck.
• Examination of birth defects in the brain, spinal cord, heart or other parts of the body
• Check the amount of amniotic fluid. Amniotic fluid is a clear fluid that surrounds the unborn baby during pregnancy and protects the child from external damage and cold. It also helps in lung growth and bone growth.
• Pregnancy ultrasound is used to examine the unborn baby and can provide information about the baby’s growth, development and overall health.
Diagnostic ultrasound:
• Checking the speed and normal level of blood flow
• Examination of the structure of the heart
Check for blockage in the gallbladder
• Check the thyroid gland for cancer or non-cancerous mass growth
• Checking the presence of abnormalities in the abdomen and kidneys
Diagnostic ultrasound is used to view and provide information about other internal parts of the body. Parts such as heart, blood vessels, liver, bladder, kidneys and female reproductive organs.
